The Metrolink to Stockport as originally planned would have start out from East Didsbury on the old Midland line but would have diverted off southwards quite soon and followed a route into Stockport that was generally parallel to . Of these proposals, parts have survived as extension plans: the lines to Rochdale and East Didsbury formed part of the Phase 3; the Eccles line is a modified version of the proposed extension into Salford Quays. The proposal to convert the Marple/Rose Hill and Hadfield/Glossop lines to Metrolink running was abandoned, and does not feature in the current Phase 3 .
